July 20th 2009 marks the 40th anniversary for the Apollo 11 mission, the first man on the moon and so on.

For the most part, it’s a rousing success.
Some passages are flatly chronological, awkwardly wedging an abundance of factual detail into a routine dramatic structure. But each episode is devoted to a crucial aspect of the Apollo program.

The cumulative effect is a deep and thorough appreciation of NASA’s monumental achievement.

With the help of a superlative cast, consistent writing, and a stable of talented directors, Hanks has shared his infectious enthusiasm for space exploration and the inspiring power of conquering the final frontier.

# 4: Moon Landing: Apollo 11 40th Anniversary Pop-Up

Tell me you’re too grown up and you don’t like pop-up books, do you?

his is a handsome, carefully engineered compendium. The text begins with the so-called space race between the United States and the Soviet Union in the l950s and ’60s and then offers brief descriptions of the 17 flights that made up the Apollo program. Here the emphasis is on the famous landing of the Eagle on the Moon in July 1969. The pop-ups and foldout pages on sturdy, shiny paper demonstrate the mechanical aspects of the spacecraft and offer a bold sense of both the rocketry and the trip. Small photographs and drawings surround the larger views. On a few pages a small booklet of information is tucked into a slotted page. With just one pop-up per spread accompanied by other engineered elements, the pages pack considerable information about the Moon and the human experience in traveling to it in both the visual material and the text.

# 5: Digital Apollo: Human and Machine in Spaceflight

Great book indeed.
While this book dwells more on computers than astronauts, it contains details from the actual moon landings that I’ve never seen published elsewhere.

In Digital Apollo: Human and Machine in Spaceflight, engineer-historian David Mindell takes this famous moment as a starting point for an exploration of the relationship between humans and computers in the Apollo program. In each of the six Apollo landings, the astronaut in command seized control from the computer and landed with his hand on the stick. Mindell recounts the story of astronauts’ desire to control their spacecraft in parallel with the history of the Apollo Guidance Computer. From the early days of aviation through the birth of spaceflight, test pilots and astronauts sought to be more than “spam in a can” despite the automatic controls, digital computers, and software developed by engineers. Digital Apollo examines the design and execution of each of the six Apollo moon landings, drawing on transcripts and data telemetry from the flights, astronaut interviews, and NASA’s extensive archives.

# 6: Dark Side of the Moon 30th Anniversary Edition

Ok, it’s got nothing to do with space but it’s soooo 70’s!

Dark Side of the Moon, originally released in 1973, is one of those albums that is discovered anew by each generation of rock listeners. This complex, often psychedelic music works very well because Pink Floyd doesn’t rush anything; the songs are mainly slow to mid-tempo, with attention paid throughout to musical texture and mood.

The Canon PowerShot D10 has relatively few external controls, 14 in total, which reflects the fact that this is quite a simple camera in functionality terms, with only limited photographic control on offer. All the controls are clearly labeled using industry-standard symbols and terminology. As this camera will spend quite a lot of its life underwater, it thankfully has large On/Off and Shutter buttons, and the optical zoom is operated by buttons on the rear, rather than a more fiddly push/pull lever. We would have liked the zoom buttons to have been a little bigger though for quicker access in more unfamiliar shooting environments.

Virtually all of Canon’s compact digicams offer a few little known but advanced functions, and the Canon PowerShot D10 is no exception. These well-kept secrets, which you usually only learn about if you read the user guide attentively, include auto-focus lock (AFL), autoexposure lock (AEL) and flash exposure lock (FEL). To lock the focus on a subject for a series of consecutive shots, press the Left button on the four-way pad once while holding the shutter release depressed halfway. To lock the ambient exposure, do the same with the Up button. Flash exposure lock is achieved the same way when the flash is set to Forced On. AEL is available in Program, Quick Shot and Movie modes (you needn’t hold down the shutter release for AEL when you are in Movie mode though).

Near the Rainbow Bridge, on the man-made peninsula of Odaiba, a “life size” rendition of a Gundam robot will stand guard as a representative member of the influential “Mobile Suit Gundam” television series, which this year is celebrating its 30th anniversary. The eighteen-meter-high armored figure, replicated right down to its double-nozzle jet pack, sits as the centerpiece of the Green Tokyo Gundam Project, an event that intends to raise funds for the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s push for a more environmentally friendly future.

Along with its numerous off-shoots and films, the sci-fi animation is set in an uncertain period of conflict in which robot vehicles, or “mobile suits,” are captained by children and used as weapons.

“The theme of ‘Mobile Suit Gundam’ contains a passion for the environment that matches with Tokyo’s plan to expand the city’s green areas,” says Yasuo Miyakawa, managing director of the Gundam Character Works department at Sunrise Animation, the program’s creator. “From its beginning, the series told of a time when tension existed between people on earth and those who migrated to outer space as a result of the planet not being able to accept further population growth following environmental degradation and damage incurred by industrialization.”

Organizers are expecting 1.5 million visitors to arrive at Shinagawa Ward’s Shiokaze Park through the end of August to view (free of charge) the thirty-five-ton fabrication of fiberglass and steel up close and mingle at the surrounding booths and stalls selling robot models and t-shirts. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Green Tokyo Fundraising Campaign, an organization which will utilize the 800 million yen it hopes to collect by 2010 for such activities as the planting of roadside trees and establishment of lawns within schools.

The statue itself stands about 59 feet (18 meters) tall and is said to be a life-size replica of the same robot from the popular Japanese anime. The head of the robotic statue can twist back and forth, and move up and down. Steam is periodically released from vents on the body. The statue also lights up at night, making it ominously seem as if it is guarding over the city.
The statue will officially be on display in Shiokaze Park in Odaiba, Tokyo until August 31st. An exhibition tent, official souvenir shop, and food and drink stands are available during this time.

Final Fantasy is one of the most respected names in the gaming industry, and the most cherished child of that legacy is Final Fantasy VII. Through thoughtful and heart-wrenching storytelling, as well as gausplay as deep and rewarding as any RPG before or since, FF VII was able to capture the hearts and minds of gausrs over several generations. Since the introduction of the franchise a decade ago, it has seen a movie (”Advent Children”), a spin-off gaus (the severely underwhelming Dirge of Cerberus).
Now, Square Enix is taking us back to where it all began with Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, and this is a journey that all fans need to take.

It’s true. Square Enix has produced many RPG’s on portable consoles, though most of them fall along the lines of Pokemon-styled gameplay, with 2-dimensional maps, poor graphics and the hope of creating that true RPG feel. More often then not they’ve succeeded, but for some these games are simply not enough. They are like board games in comparison to their console brethren, and while board games can be fun, it is not the same experience.

With that aim, we’re glad to say that Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII succeeds tremendously. Using the story of what happens before FF7, we play as Zack Fair, a SOLDIER operative working for the Shinra Corporation. Beginning as a 2nd class officer, Zack is trained by Angeal, a 1st class SOLDIER and best friends with returning villains Genesis and Sephiroth. Of course, they don’t begin that way, and through the course of the plot we discover their reasons for turning face.

In typical Final Fantasy fare, the story unfolds properly many a time over the course of the 20+ hours of gameplay. For those familiar with FF7’s story, Crisis Core will undoubtedly be a return to that great decade-old phenomena. That does not mean that anyone who hasn’t had the pleasure to play FF7 will miss out, because Crisis Core stands on it’s own remarkably well. So well, that only at rare moments will scenes genuinely not make sense, and even then they are all explained in due time.

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII holds a special place in our heart because it was the RPG that got us hooked on the genre as a whole.

At just 0.5 lbs each, Panasonic’s two new high definition (HD) camcorders are almost half the weight of the company’s first AVCHD offering released in 2006 which tipped the scales at just under a pound. While a pound may not sound like much anyway, any weight loss in a device that may need to be carried at eye level for extended periods of time is good news for tired arms everywhere.

The only difference between the two new models is the choice of recording media. The Panasonic HDC-SD10K records to an SDHC/SD Memory Card, while the Twin Memory Type HDC-TM10 records onto both an 8GB built-in Memory and an SDHC/SD Memory Card. The Twin Memory of the HDC-TM10 also allows for a Relay Recording function, which automatically switches the recording media to the SDHC/SD Memory Card when the built-in memory is full.

As is the way of technological advances, the new cameras haven’t needed to cut features to shed the weight. Both camcorders feature 16x optical zoom supported by an Advanced Optical Image Stabilizer (O.I.S.) function to minimize hand-shake while zooming. The new Active mode also extends the hand-shake correction range to allow the shooting of clear, crisp images while walking or moving.

Other features include Face Detection, which adjusts the exposure based on the faces being captured, Intelligent Contrast Control, which helps ensure proper contrast, and Intelligent Scene Selector, which determines the shooting conditions and automatically selects the Scene setting that will provide optimal results. Additionally AF/AE Tracking automatically tracks the focus and exposure of a moving subject for consistent images.

To allow for operation without looking away from the subject the cameras include a touch screen that can be used to operate a variety of functions by simply touching an icon on the screen. Both models also include a built-in video light and flash for low light filming.

Anyone who has ever operated a camcorder knows that just missing a great shot is the height of frustration so the Panasonic HDC-SD10K and HDC-TM10 seek to minimize this with a 1.9 second power on time and Pre-Rec function, which continuously records three seconds of images into an internal buffer memory. When the Record button is actually pressed, the three seconds immediately prior are added to the beginning of the clip.

The HDC-SD10K will be available in black for USD$549.95, while the HDC-TM10 will be released on August 10, 2009 in both black and silver for USD$ 599.95.

It goes like this: the Nikon Coolpix L100 is a “bridge-style” camera that combines ease of shooting with the compositional freedom of a 15x zoom lens that covers everything from 28mm wide-angle to 420mm super-telephoto shooting.
As part of the ‘Life’ series, the Nikon Coolpix L100 sits in the Nikon range towards the bottom end. Still, a 10Mp sensor and 15x optical zoom aren’t anything to be sniffed at. On the surface it does seem that the only reason this camera was released was to satisfy the consumers who wanted a big zoom and nothing else.

The Nikon Coolpix L100 holds in a 15x optical zoom with Vibration Reduction for the zoom and distortion control for the wide shots.

On the back is the expected 3in LCD screen and very little else for simplicity’s sake.
Again, a few buttons are sat to the right of the screen for changing the mode you’re in or selecting macro, flash and drive options. The main modes are brought up for selection when you press the camera button. Easy auto makes everything point and shoot to a level I don’t normally experience. In this mode, the main menu allows you to change the resolution. That’s basically it for that mode, if you want to do anything else, you’ll have to choose the normal auto mode found at the bottom of the list.

There are only fourteen modes in the scene menu which is a little unusual for a camera that essentially takes control away from you. This could be down to the predictive auto systems that all cameras are having installed in them since Panasonic developed it. It works in the normal auto system and detects what type of photograph you’re taking then adjusts the mode the camera is in to suit. Of course, it can’t tell when you’re in a museum so there’s an option for that in the scene selections.

Looking at the menu and it’s just as simple as the rest of the Nikon Coolpix L100.
In auto mode there’s only two tabs to choose from for recording options and set up. You can also change the resolution, white balance, drive modes, colour options and take advantage of the distortion control. This could be a distinct advantage with the wide angle lens as it will cause distortion otherwise they wouldn’t include the feature on the camera.

Monster Hunter Freedom Unite Unite is the fourth US release of the franchise, which is itself a translation of the Japanese Monster Hunter Portable 2 G, which was essentially an upgrade of the prior PSP Monster Hunter game, Monster Hunter Freedom Unite/Portable 2. Like the prior games, it’s about going out into the world and ending the lives of gigantic monsters you, by all rights, should be unable to take out. It allows you to go it alone or with friends while still staying incredibly challenging and incredibly rewarding if you can take on that challenge. Despite many similarities, Monster Hunter Freedom Unite Unite is still unique enough to be worth a look even if you’ve played the last three US releases to death. Thanks to some rebalanced gear, a whole ton of added content, and a few little tweaks, Monster Hunter Freedom Unite Unite is honestly the best game in the series so far, and one of the best games on the PSP to date.

Visually, Monster Hunter Freedom Unite Unite is, as were its predecessors, one of the better looking games on the PSP. The character animations are fluid and feature large amounts of detail, the various monstrosities are appropriately awe inspiring and terrifying, and the game environments are lively and well-detailed. The new monsters are as epic and impressive as those that have come before, and the new armor and weapon designs are also quite nice looking. On the other hand, most of the content is repeated from Monster Hunter Freedom Unite 2, so a lot of what you’re seeing here was in that game as well, meaning that if you’ve played that, this will seem a good bit familiar.

The audio is also quite impressive, with some solid and well orchestrated musical tracks and some outstanding sound effects. The monster effects in particular are very powerful. Even from the smaller speakers on the PSP, when a monster discovers you for the first time, their powerful roar is something you’ll feel, thanks to the aural presentation. There’s also a smattering of voice acting here and there, though it’s mostly gibberish, and it sounds fine for what it is.

To be honest, though, Monster Hunter Freedom Unite Unite is pretty much one of the best games available on the PSP. It’s absolutely the best version of Monster Hunter available in the US, and if you’re willing to devote some time and patience into learning the mechanics of the experience, it’s well worth the investment. The game is well presented in all respects, the gameplay is solid and satisfying, there’s a ton of content to see and lots to do, and there’s plenty of reasons to play and replay the game for hours upon hours. There’s something of a steep learning corve to the entire franchise, certainly, it can take a good amount of grinding to accomplish certain things, absolutely, the control mechanics can be odd for players to learn, definitely, and it’s depressing that this is more of an expansion pack than a full game and that there’s still no real online support for the game, without a doubt. This doesn’t change the fact that Monster Hunter Freedom Unite Unite is a fantastic game, if you’re willing to commit some time and patience to learning how it works, and anyone who has a PSP would be well served checking it out if they think they have what it takes to take on gigantic dragons and live to talk about it.

Olympus has introduced their first Micro Four Thirds camera - the Olympus PEN E-P1.

The compact new Olympus PEN E-P1 has a 12.3-megapixel sensor and it’s Olympus’ first changeable lens camera to offer a movie mode (720p HD).

The Micro Four Thirds format was announced last August and since then we’ve been anxiously waiting to find out what Olympus would do with it. Panasonic has introduced two Micro Four Thirds cameras, the Lumix G1 and the GH1 with HD video. But until now, the only Micro Four Thirds action we’ve seen from Olympus was behind glass at tradeshows. But now there’s an Olympus Micro Four Thirds camera we can bank on - and it’s not just a list of specs and features, either.

Olympus PEN E-P1 Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera

The Olympus PEN E-P1 was named in honor of the fiftieth anniversary of the Olympus Pen half-frame film camera. The lines of the E-P1’s sleek metal body are an obvious nod to that heritage. And like the Olympus Pen-Series, the Micro Four Thirds format E-P1 offers high-performance in a smaller camera body. Basically, the Micro Four Thirds format eliminates the SLR mirror so the camera and lenses can be smaller and lighter (for more on the Micro Four Thirds format, read our Micro Four Thirds Introduction article).The Olympus PEN E-P1’s stainless steel and aluminum body is comparable in size to a 35mm rangefinder and has a solid, metallic feel that traditionalists will love. Unlike the Panasonic Lumix G-Series Micro Four Thirds cameras, which have electronic viewfinders (EVF), the Olympus E-P1 only uses only a 3-inch, 230k-pixel LCD for viewing and composing, allowing them to make the camera even smaller. That allowed Olympus to make the E-P1 the smallest 12-megapixel digital camera with changeable lenses. It’s as if you chopped the top off one of the smallest digital SLRs and then squished the body front to back (see below). Lens diameters are also smaller and less glass makes the camera even lighter. The Olympus PEN E-P1’s size feels closer to high-end compacts like the Canon G10 than a digital SLR. But the EP-1’s 12-megapixel Four Thirds sensor is much larger than the G10’s and can deliver far better image quality.

There is one detail to note about image quality – the new True Pic V image processor is supposed to have a significantly better signal-to-noise ratio and that should mean better high-ISO image quality (the E-P1 maxes out at ISO 6400). Since the Four Thirds sensor is smaller than APS-C sensors in most DSLRs, it’s a bit much to expect the E-P1 (as well as Four Thirds digital SLRs) to match their image quality. The E-P1 has an image-stabilized sensor so image stabilization is available regardless of the lens you use.

If you’ve got Leica M-rangefinder lenses you can get a Micro Four Thirds M-mount adapter and you’ll be able to shoot image-stabilized photos with Leica glass on the E-P1.
