Kodak announces the new Kodak Z981 Superzoom: 14mp and 26X optical zoom along with PASM control, RAW and vertical grip

Saturday, February 6th, 2010

Kodak is back with the brand new Kodak Z981 superzoom compact digital camera one year after the announcement of the Z980 super-zoom at CES 2009.

The model name “advances” by just +1, but the camera actually jumps to a 14mp sensor and 26X zoom ratio, up from 12mp and 24X.

The lens is also Schneider-branded, f2.6-f5, and has a 26-676mm equivalent focal range, enough for most photo-amateurs, along with image stabilization.

The Kodak Z981 sports a really useful vertical shutter button and a detachable vertical (non-battery) grip.

On the plus side, the camera has RAW capture and PASM which is short for Program, Aperture and Shutter priority, and Manual exposure: that means that Pro-oriented photographers will get their teeth on Pro-features and a less than 0.2 second click-to-capture specification.

Other features include a huge 3-inch display and (as required by 2010 standards!) one-touch upload to popular web-services (flickr, youtube, facebook, etc).

The Kodak Z981 takes four AA batteries, and Kodak actually includes four of the pre-charged (presumably LSD) types. This is a nice touch for AA cameras.

The Kodak Z981 is available for pre-order now at Amazon for $330.

Shopping season special: Amazon Kindle 6″ really rocks

Sunday, December 13th, 2009

It’s been around for a while and it’s well known but, you know, the newest Kindle really rocks!

The biggest and latest e-book gear from Amazon now relies on international wireless support, so you’re never out of touch when it comes to getting new content and e-books (even outside the USA).

Amazon recently started exporting the Kindle to other countries, so you can buy one and use it wherever you are!
Amazon struggled to negotiate deals with European carriers, which was one reason why the Kindle was not already available to the European market, so instead, the Kindle roams from the AT&T network.

The features are fairly similar to those available to American customers. One can subscribe to and download newspapers, magazines and buy and and download books.

Several features set it apart from the others:

1. Amazon’s 130,000+ Kindle-format books are priced around $9.99 (some higher or lower).
2. Built-in wireless (called Whispernet) downloading is also free with purchase of the Kindle.
3. Form factor: the unit is shaped something like a book and is tapered on one side to make it easy to hold. The machine does make it very easy to read for long periods of time without the fatigue you get in your hand from holding a book open and up while reading.

The two major upsides to eBooks are presently: generally lower cost and ease of transportation.
Book addicts like us can literally carry hundreds of books in a unit the size of a typical small paperback.
Another benefit that may not be obvious at first is privacy.
How many times have you found yourself in a waiting room, an airplane, or other public places and wished those around you could not see what you were reading?

The 9.7” e-ink screen (no backlit or LCD) provides a pleasant reading experience. At first, we were afraid that some documents wouldn’t be as readable due to the fixed format of PDF.
But thus far, the Kindle DX seems to solve this very elegantly.
Getting a PDF documents on the device is as easy as you’ve come to expect. Just hook it up on your PC using USB, copy the files and you’re good to go.

The amount of storage is amazing. you can practically put your entire library on there without running out of space.
It also has a very long battery life. We’ve been using it for about two weeks now and so far did not have to recharge the battery.

If you want a 2001 H.A.L. relationship with your Kindle, check the Read-To-Me Feature!

With the experimental Text-to-Speech feature, Kindle can read English newspapers, magazines, blogs, and books out loud to you, unless the book’s rights holder made the feature unavailable. You can switch back and forth between reading and listening, and your spot is automatically saved. Pages automatically turn while the content is being read, so you can listen hands-free. You can choose from both male and female voices which can be sped up or slowed down to suit your preference. In the middle of a great book or article but have to jump in the car? Simply turn on Text-to-Speech and listen on the go.

The Amazon Kindle goes for US $ 259.00 right now, happy reading!

Nikon savings: purchase the new Nikon D300s and save 50% off the pocket-powerful Nikon Coolpix S710

Monday, September 28th, 2009

For a limited time, purchase Nikon’s next-generation D300s digital SLR and save 50% on the powerful, pocket-sized Coolpix S710.
Here’s some clue on this bast-Nikons-deal!

Nikon D300s

The Nikon D300s updates the excellent D300 as Nikon’s flagship DX format DSLR. It combines the performance and handling panache of its predecessor with high-definition video capability.

The Nikon D300 made a impressionable impact when it was first launched 2 years ago making it the semi-professional DSLR to beat. And in many respects it is still the camera to beat in that class. After 2 years, Nikon deemed it is time to up the ante, which most notably includes support for 720p video capture, and launched the D300S. The D300S will replace the D300 the same way the D70S replaced the D70 and it is looking to hold on to that high-end non-full frame slot for a long time.
Design

In line with tradition, the Nikon D300s
looks just like its older counterpart. The most notable addition is the three small holes just underneath the model number which is a microphone, a feature last seen in the D90.

Many of the new features on the Nikon D300s
are those that are already featured on recent Nikon DSLRs like virtual horizon from the D3 and movies from the D90. But one genuine new feature is the inclusion of contrast-detection autofocus that operates while in movie mode. This is a first for a Nikon DSLR.

There are some changes to the connection ports on the left. The HDMI output is now a mini HDMI port with a smaller Type-C specification.
Also new are twin card slots – one Type I CompactFlash and one SD/SDHC – with a full complement of write options. Either slot can be designated the primary one, with the secondary slot used for Backup (each photo is written to both cards) or Overflow (when the primary card is full the camera switches to writing to the secondary card). In addition, the Nikon D300s
can be configured to store NEFs on one and JPEGs on the other, plus photos can be copied between the cards too. Also interesting is the support for the newer Wi-Fi capable memory cards.

Many changes can also be found on the back where there is a repositioned “Lv” button which activates the Live view feature. Just below that is the “Info” which brings the Nikon D300s
up to the same level of usability as the D90. The dedicated “Info” button is extremely useful in that it lets you get to every camera setting and menu item using only your right hand.

Performance

The Nikon D300S is responsive and the improved frame rate is also a bonus. Still image focusing is fast and the AF viewfinder confirmation display is superb, the improved frame advance rate helps with fleeting subjects but seems to suffer when shooting uncompressed RAW files.

Metering and white balance are almost flawless. In terms of white balance, using auto WB setting seems to have a slight orange cast, but if you pick the correct WB setting for the picture by using a custom setting, the D300S renders natural looking images. Metering is excellent with the 3D Color Matrix.

In terms of image noise, shots in near darkness at ISO 1600 provide images with a good balance between image detail and noise. However, pushing ISO to 6400 results in images with an obvious level of noise.

Nikon Coolpix S710

The Nikon Coolpix S710 is a 14.5 megapixel digital camera. It has a 3.6x wide angle lens. One advantage it has over other smaller compacts is the fact it also has manual exposure modes. Other features include image stabilisation and a 3 inch LCD screen.

The Nikon Coolpix S710 is a compact that’s suited to night-time photography. Not only does it feature a 3-inch LCD screen that’s bright and easy to view in low light, but it also comes equipped with a generously high ISO of up to 12800 (allowing you to capture images in lower light without the need for flash) as well a Vibration Reduction feature to cut down on unsightly image wobble.

High quality Canon Lenses with great savings - Part 1

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

We love high-quality lenses so here we go with a two-part survey of hard-to-beat Canon lenses with hard-to-resist savings and discounts!

You may find it helpful since savings are in the 30-40% range and since these lenses are not exactly cheap, these offers make them a lot more affordable by pro-amateur photographers!

100-400 mm

Meet Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 USM L IS which is Canon´s long range zoom lens primarily meant for sports-, wildlife- and press photography. Due to its rather small max. aperture it isn´t quite suitable for portraits.
On an APS-C DSLR the field-of-view resembles a whopping 160-640mm lens on classic (full-frame) SLRs.

The lens has a very good build quality - no wobbling whatsoever inc. smooth focusing action. It has a push-pull zoom mechanism which has both pros and cons. You can zoom very fast if necessary but at cost of accuracy. The amount of zoom friction can be adjusted using a dedicated control ring. It´s also possible to lock the lens at a certain zoom position so zoom creeping is not an issue.

True inner focus 4x or 5x zooms in this range aren´t overly likely to emerge in this range due to the physical size requirements for the 400mm setting.

One of the primary and still strong selling argument is the IS (Image Stabilizer).

The lens features a ring-type USM drive resulting in a very fast and virtually silent AF operation. Full-time manual focusing is possible in one-shot AF mode. To avoid unnecessary hunting there’s a focus limiter where you can choose between 1.8m-infinity or 6.5m-infinity.

Price for the Canon EF 100-400mm is US $ 1.400.00 (and that’s 42% off its regular price!)

16-35 mm

On the other side, let’s look at a ultra wide-angle lens from Canon: the Canon EF 16-35mm ultra-wide-angle zoom lens.

Taking over the ultra-wide angle position of the available professional grade f/2.8 zoom lenses from the Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8 L USM Lens, the 16-35 L II becomes the new standard for professional and serious amateur photographers alike.

Specifically designed for improved edge-to-edge image quality that meets the strict requirements of professional and high-end amateur photographers alike, the lens lets you bring more area into focus while providing greater depth of field. The lens features three high-precision aspherical lens elements–ground, replica, and GMo–that produce even better image quality than the original Canon EF 16-35mm USM lens. The circular aperture, meanwhile, produces a beautiful and natural background blur when shooting at wider apertures. Other details include internal focusing, a ring-type ultra-sonic monitor (USM), and new AF algorithms for fast and quiet autofocusing.

The large 82mm filter size is a first for Canon EF Lenses. High quality filters of this size are expensive and at this point, not shareable on other Canon lenses without a stepping ring. The larger objective end of the barrel reduces the handling comfort of this lens only slightly, but the improved image quality is definitely worth the change. Focus and zoom rings are well-positioned, nicely sized, smooth and well-damped.

Price for the Canon EF 16-35mm is US $ 1.399.00 (a 39% cut-off from list price tag).

50 mm

Last but not least a super-classic lens we all started with: a 50 mm.

Actually, this is the Canon EF 50mm f/1.2 L USM!

The Canon EF 50mm f/1.2 L USM lens is a peerless standard lens for Canon digital SLR cameras.
The lens is suitable for any shooting situation, with a lens coating and construction type that are optimized to minimize the ghosting and flare that frequently occurs when lenses are used with digital cameras.

The Canon EF 50mm f/1.2 L USM also offers an ultra-large aperture ( f/1.2 !!!) that produces a narrow depth of field and the type of soft background blur so loved by photographers everywhere.

The high-performance, weather-resistant lens delivers all the superb image resolution and contrast you expect in a Canon L Series lens.

What we really love about it: picture quality - from f1.2 thru f2.8, the lens works superbly. AF is fast & faster compared to 50mm 1.4.

List price for the Canon EF 50mm f/1.2 L USM is now $1,499.00 (which is some 35% cut-off from its regular price).

More Canon lenses soon up & coming in part #2!

Archos 5 160 GB Internet Media Tablet: touch screen media play with network access

Friday, May 1st, 2009

Design Archos is promoting the Archos 5as a Wi-Fi Internet tablet, but its chromed plastic enclosure and 5-inch touch screen look more like a luxury GPS unit. In fact, for an extra $129 you actually can use the Archos 5 as a relatively sophisticated in-car GPS system. Unlike its predecessor, the 605 WiFi, the Archos 5 is controlled almost entirely by its touch screen, with the exception of a power button and volume rocker on the top edge of the device. A 3.5mm headphone output is located midway up on the left edge, making the gadget more awkward to hold than the 605 WiFi. Thankfully, a built-in kickstand folds out from the back of the Archos 5 for hands-free viewing.

The Archos 5 measures 5 inches wide, 3 inches tall, and 0.5 inch thick (or 0.75 inch thick for the 120GB and 250GB versions), making it not much bigger than the 605 WiFi. Despite its similar size, Archos was able to squeeze an extra half-inch of screen onto the Archos 5 by removing the redundant physical controls found on the company’s previous players and placing the integrated speaker on the right edge of the device instead of the front.

Features

The Archos 5 has plenty of features to brag about, including music and video playback, a photo viewer, Opera Web browser, Flash 9 video and game support, a PDF reader, e-mail support, and an integrated video download store. You also get optional support for digital video recording and output through the latest Archos DVR Station, and support for 3G and 3.5G HSDPA wireless connections through the use of USB modem dongles offered by your mobile carrier.

Despite the manufacturer’s protest that Archos 5 shouldn’t be categorized as a mere portable video player, video playback is the Archos 5’s strongest feature. Out of the box, the Archos 5 offers support for AVI, WMV, MPEG4, and Flash video content with no transcoding necessary for videos sized at or below 640×480. Although Archos makes no mention of it, we were happy to see that DRM-protected WMV videos from Amazon’s Video On-Demand service played on the Archos 5 with no problem. For an extra $20, you can outfit the Archos 5 with a high-definition software plug-in to enable 720p video playback from WMV HD, MPEG4, or MPEG-2 files (including VOB and DivX formats). To play h.264 videos, you’ll need to throw another $20 at the Archos 5 for a Podcast media plug-in, which also enables AAC audio playback.

The Archos 5 is clearly more than a portable video player, but it is no more deserving of the Internet Media Tablet moniker than Apple’s iPod Touch. Like the Safari Web browser used on the iPod Touch or iPhone, the Opera Web browser included on the Archos 5 provides an above-average mobile Internet experience, but there are some blind spots. Because the Flash 9 support on the Archos 5 exists outside of the Opera Web browser as an independent application, many Web sites and services are incompatible. During our tests, we found that simple Flash video sites such as YouTube worked fine, while sites such as Hulu, CNET TV, ABC, and Comedy Central, stalled the browser or played only the preroll advertising associated with the video.

An e-mail application is also included with the Archos 5, however, at the time of this review the e-mail program launches with a disclaimer that it is still in beta development.

Get your hands on the Archos 5, now 14% off at US$ 388.50!

Let’s get classic! Classic video games from the past return in new shape!

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

We love geekery.
We respect venerable good ol’ video games that made history (in one way or the other!).
Here’s a poker of video game history makers, somehow shaped for new challenges and, more important, fitting your pocket so you can retro-play wherever you are.

No more arcades? So what about an all-time classic?
Enter Classic Arcade Space Invaders: 1978-design still intriguing; hordes of swarming hostiles ready to invade us!
(I guess I’ve exterminated zillions of them, don’t tell SETI about it).
Check this MGA’s Classic Arcade Space Invaders
LCD version: small joystick, same threat, same hours spent fighting ‘em.

Remember Missile Command?
Atari’s smash hit featured the very first trackball around and, as coins were spun in, the trackball was spun around tracking down falling missiles from a bunch of soon-to-be-destroyed bases (you, by the way).
MGA’s Classic ArcadeMissile Command even reproduces the same arcade cabinet, without the need for coins alas.

Again, long before PSPs and even Nintendos portable consoles, Mattel was ruling with their pocket games.
By today standards they barely seem laughable, but back then… the LEDs minimalistic-displays were hard to beat and the games were tough.

Take for example Mattel’s Classic Basketball Game: check NBA-style schemes against a processor that maybe doesn’t even reach a MegaHertz clock…
One player or two can try this one.

For a complete and shared experience there’s even a Classics Sports Plug and Play featuring old-school football, baseball or basketball you can play on standard TV sets (no HD-TV allowed!).

Batteries not included, fun is!

Just for today: Sigma DP1 14MP Digital Camera lowest price ever!

Thursday, April 9th, 2009

Why the Sigma DP1 is a new camera concept?

In some way the new Sigma DP1 is a great concept.
Use a small P&S like camera, insert a larger DSLR sensor (here the Foveon sensor of the Sigma SD14) and add a good lens.
Larger sensors can mean less noise and more image quality.

Sigma decided to use a fix focus 28mm f/4 lens which makes it a cool wide-angle compact camera.
Maybe to get a smaller lens the sensor could even be slightly smaller. Also the decision to have a good optical viewfinder (although optional with the Sigma DP1) is a good idea.

The main reason for the attracting so much interest is its sensor: the controversial Foveon X3 sensor capable of 14MP resolution, and the first APS-C sized sensor in a compact digicam.
The sensor, last seen in the Sigma SD14 DSLR, has aroused criticism due to the way the image is captured by three layers of photocells buried within differing depths of the silicon substrate. One of silicon’s properties is the way it absorbs red, green and blue light at different depths and Foveon uses that property to build the pixels within three strata of the chip. Traditional CCD or CMOS sensors have the photocells on top of the chip, and use a Bayer RGB filter to separate the different colours.

It is possible to record images in RAW or the widely used JPEG in four resolution modes. It offers five Exposure modes and three Metering modes as well as being equipped with a built-in flash with the Guide Number of 6, hot shoe, neck strap and 2.5-inch TFT color LCD monitor with approximately 230,000 pixels.

The DP1 has the high resolution and functionality of an SLR, plus adaptability in terms of accessories, all built into a small body. A wide range of accessories, optical viewfinder [VF-11], Lens Hood [HA-11], and Electronic Flash [EF-140 DG] are available for the DP1 camera.

Why today?

Because, there’s an offer for the Sigma DP1 that is valid today only, April 9, 2009, and while supplies last, so hurry up!

  • Amazon Jumps Into Video Games Trade-ins

    Saturday, March 7th, 2009

World’s largest online retailer offering gift cards in return for old video games.

E-commerce giant Amazon has unveiled a video game trade-in program, offering customers gift cards to the most popular store on the Web in return for old video games.

It’s a move that could position Amazon to better capitalize on one of the healthier media segments: games. Reselling used games also could be potentially lucrative for the world’s largest online retailer, considering that prices on pre-played titles can still remain fairly high while still representing a discount from the $50 and $60 cost of new products.

Amazon is accepting old games from the major console systems, including Microsoft Xbox, Nintendo Wii and Sony PlayStation. The online retail giant is not accepting PC games, however, a move that has garnered criticism in the site’s discussion forum.

Check here for Amazon’s video game trade-in program.

Canon A590 IS: a best-seller that still fits most photographers’ dreams!

    Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

It’s been around for a while, it may not have all the techno-features of the very latest competitors, but the Canon PowerShot A590IS 8MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom is still one of the very best compact cameras around.

Take a look at this chart from 1001noisycameras.com and spot which camera (not just compact models) is the best seller! :)

    The raw data:

  • 8.0 effective megapixel CCD,
  • Canon’s Digic III processor,
  • 35-140mm 35mm-equivalent lens with 4x Optical image-stabilized zoom and up to 4x Digital Zoom,
  • 2.5-inch LCD screen; Face DetectionWhat’s more, compared to other (even newer) cameras:
  • sensitivity up to 1600
  • Face Detection AF
  • 13 shooting modes, 7 scene modes including Easy Mode
  • Program, Shutter-Priority and Aperture-Priority Exposure Modes
  • 32MB internal memory
  • DIGIC III Image Processor
  • 5cm macro (!)Last but not least, Canon offers optional accessories for the A590 IS, including Selphy Photo Printer and converter lenses! Why we do love it?

Besides high-ISO ability, the Canon A590IS is one of the very few compact cameras featuring true photographic controls hidden within the 13 shooting modes: Aperture and Shutter Priority modes, the one that really give any amateur photographer the right tools to take control over photo shooting the good ol’ way and right the same way as DSLRs do.

Don’t dismiss the Canon A590IS and give it a second look: it’s now even more affordable than ever at US$ 109.00!
